Warring Zanu PF party factions in heated exchange

SPARKS flew in last Saturday’s Midlands provincial co-ordinating committee meeting where members aligned to Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa were being charged with harassing a trio from the same province and fanning factionalism in the province.

Three provincial executive members, Justice Mayor Wadyajena (youth secretary for administration), Owen Mudha Ncube (secretary for security) and Edmore Samambwa (youth provincial chairman) were hauled before the disciplinary committee after three ministers from the province — Makhosini Hlongwane, Tapiwa Matangaidze and Annastacia Ndhlovu — wrote a letter to Zanu PF national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere and Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko complaining of harassment from Mnangagwa’s backers.

The provincial members met last week on Saturday where a verdict on the outcome of the case was announced.

Sources said the meeting turned nasty as warring factions had a heated exchange over the issue with some alleging that the ministers had sold out.

“Midlands provincial members are very angry with the three ministers and last week on Saturday members vented their anger,” the source said.

“The ministers were told by the secretary-general of the war veterans association, Victor Matemadanda that they were dicing with death by selling out to the G40 (Generation 40) faction.”

Another source said the national secretary of administration in the Youth League, Lewis Matutu also accused the trio of having sold out and being members of the G40 group, aligned to First Lady Grace Mugabe.

Sources in Midlands said the provincial disciplinary committee chaired by deputy chairperson Daniel Mackenzie Ncube absolved the accused members saying the three ministers failed to substantiate their accusations by providing evidence.

However, the ministers have since appealed to the national disciplinary committee which is chaired by Mphoko who is said to be a key member of the G40 faction. The group is said to be determined to stop Mnangagwa ascend to the helm of the party after President Robert Mugabe leaves office.

Mnangagwa’s backers, on the other hand, want the tables turned against the ministers.

Hlongwane, Matangaidze and Ndhlovu, who were appointed ministers in September last year, said they were being harassed “to remove their loyalty from President Robert Mugabe” and so that they submit “to an alternative narrative”.

Most Zanu PF officials believe the alternative narrative was to support Mnangagwa’s presidential ambitions. Chief G40 proponents reportedly include Kasukuwere, Higher Education minister Jonathan Moyo and Mugabe’s nephew, Patrick Zhuwao, who is Indigenisation minister.-ZimInd
