If you are planning to watch South African stand-up comedian Barry Hilton perform in Harare on February 27, you might want to make some moves. Organisers of the show said tickets to the “one night only” event were selling like hot cakes.

Tonderai Mwaita of Xtratime Entertainment said the show was one of “the best-selling shows in the history of comedy in Zimbabwe.”

“Ticket sales are so impressive that there’s even talk of adding more shows. So far we have sold 60% of seats and by the time we get closer to February 27, the show would be sold out,” Mwaita said.

Hilton is a stand-up comedian who has carved a niche for himself in the cut-throat arts industry, earning himself global recognition in the last three decades.

His show at Reps Theatre in Belgravia is among his global tour, which includes a tour of Australia, where he will perform in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.

Mwaita said everything was in place and the legendary comedian had showed interest in visiting Zimbabwe.

“Show tickets are available at Spotlight Reps Theatre foyer,” said Mwaita.

Hilton was born in Zimbabwe before his family moved to North Wales and later South Africa in the 1960s.

His training on the comedy circuit alongside the likes of John Cleese, Billy Connolly and Bob Monkhouse has made him a global icon in comedy. In 2013 the comedy industry in South Africa paid tribute to him with a Lifetime Achiever award, which was presented to him at the Annual Comics’ Choice Awards.

He was the first South African to perform at the prestigious Harrah’s Improv at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, headlining four shows. Last year he opened the Hong Kong 2014 Comedy Festival, followed by performances in Singapore, Macau and Shanghai.

Besides stand-up comedy, Hilton is a corporate entertainer, motivational speaker and actor. He has featured in two movies, produced five stand-up comedy DVDs, hosted TV talk shows and featured in numerous TV commercials.
