Air Zimbabwe plane makes emergency landing in Bangkok

An Air Zimbabwe B767-200 ER aircraft with 2 passengers and 17 crew onboard has made an emergency landing in Thailand due to technical problems after taking off from the Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The Zimbabwe-bound flight departed from the Thai capital on early Wednesday but had to request an emergency return after left engine developed a fault during takeoff. There was no immediate information as to what had caused the malfunction.

The plane which was carrying seventeen crew members and two passengers landed back safely at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The Air Zimbabwe plane was running a special repatriation service for South African and Zimbabwean citizens.

A statement issued by Air Zimbabwe management below:

Air Zimbabwe special repatriation flight UM462 flying from Bangkok was, early this morning, forced to make an air turn back mid-flight to Islamabad resulting from an abnormal engine parameter which necessitated a precautionary left engine shut down in accordance with established standard operating procedures.

The B767-200 ER aircraft which had 17 crew and 2 passengers on board landed safely at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, at 0839hrs (UTC). The aircraft was positioning to Islamabad to pick up 180 passengers returning to South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Our engineers are making all necessary assessments and maintenance for its return to serviceability.

Early this year Government bought Air Zimbabwe two modern Boeing 777-200ER aircraft from Malaysia. The Boeing 777-200 flew from Harare, Zimbabwe to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; after 3 months in maintenance on the ground. This Boeing 777 was delivered to Zimbabwe Airways in May 2018 but since then it had been stored in Kuala Lumpur, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Malaysia until January 2020.

Air Zimbabwe public relations and corporate communications officer Ms. Firstme Vitori recently said after suspension of flights and services because of Covid-19, the airliner is now busy working on its masterplan premised on four key pillars.
