HARARE-The Grain Millers’ Association of Zimbabwe has dismissed claims by Zimbabwe’s Agriculture Minister Dr Joseph Made that he issued enough permits to the private sector for maize import s saying he is only issuing licences to his ‘boys’, raising fears that massive corruption is underway while the nations faces serious food shortages, theZimbabwenewslive.com can reveal.
Dr Made told the state owned Herald on Thursday that he has issued enough permits in May 2015 to the private sector to import grain but they have brought very limited supplies adding that the sector also depends on its cash flows to import.
The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe chairperson, Mr Tafadzwa Musarara, said Joseph Made is not telling the truth about maize import licenses.
“That’s not correct.We understand that he issued permits to his ‘boys ‘who did not have money even to import a cob of maize. These “boys” have been coming to our members selling their permits for prices of up to $10 per tone. We challenge him to publicize the names of the recipients of the permits and we will pay for the advertisement space so that the real truth is exposed”, said Mr Musarara.
“We have filed notice to file a constitutional court application with the Attorney General”, he added.
This is not the first time Mugabe ‘s cabinet ministers at this ministry have been involved in maize import scandal.The late Kumbirai Kangai, who was then minister of Labour and Social Welfare, allegedly connived with Samson Paweni to overprice maize import s during the drought of 1982.
He was appointed Minister for Land and Agriculture, but was dropped from Cabinet in 2000 after he was embroiled in another multi-million dollar tendering procedures scandal at the state-run Grain Marketing Board (GMB).
Paweni was incarcerated, but Kangai was not prosecuted.
Efforts to get a comment from Dr Made were fruitless yesterday .
