Gumbura and his co-accused, who include armed robbers Lucky Matambanadzo and Lucky Mhungu, appeared at the Harare Magistrates Courts facing charges of attempting to escape from prison and malicious damage to state property.

Allegations are that Gumbura addressed inmates in B Cell and incited them to revolt against poor food. Both Mhungu and Matambanadzo allegedly did the same in C and D cells leading to the riots which saw inmates going berserk, destroying property while yelling before prison officers opened fired killing five in the process.

Several officers were injured during the riots.

Gumbura and his colleagues were remanded to April for trial.

Two weeks ago Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa told Parliament that investigations into the riot had revealed that Gumbura was the ring leader.

Mnangagwa said security had been enhanced and the perpetrators of the riots had been put in penal section.

Gumbura is the pastor of RMG End Time Message and was convicted of four counts of rape and one on possession of pornographic material. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

His church was also suspended by the Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe, for “Satanic practices” and for child abuse allegations against him.
