A partnership agreement which sets the plunge pool reshaping works in motion will be funded by the European Union, the World Bank, the African Development and the Government of Sweden, together with the Zambezi River Authority, which operates, maintains and manages the Kariba Dam on behalf of the governments of Zambia and Zimbabwe.

In 2015, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), said Zambia and Zimbabwe had raised about US$294,2 million with international investors, out of the $300 million required to fix deformities and cracks discovered in a series of assessments of the structure.

The work was scheduled to resume in January 2016.

The project will ensure that the dam can operate at its full capacity to international standards and that the installed power generation capacity of 1830MW will be retained.

Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Kariba Dam with the switching on of the first electricity generators in 1959. The dam was constructed between 1956 and 1960, creating the largest man-made lake in the world.
