Fingaz fires Group Editor In Chief, 20 others

by Staff Reporter

THE Financial Gazette on Thursday fired several staff members, including the Group Editor-In-Chief, Sunsleey Chamunorwa, finance manager Albert Mushonga as well as several other low level staff as the firm join other businesses that have taken advantage of a recent Supreme Court ruling which made it easy for employers to fire workers.fingazhacked_420w

Sources at the company said it was not clear if, apart from Chamunorwa, other journalists at the newspaper would be affected.

The Financial Gazette is owned by the former governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, Gideon Gono.

The paper announced in its edition of today that it was “right-sizing” its operation and will reduce staff levels by 35 percent. The firm employs 65 people and the dismissals would affect over 20 people.

“Owing to the difficult operating environment, occasioned by a shrinking economy that has seen major companies such as Econet Wireless, Delta, Zimplats and other media houses scale down operations, the Financial Gazette has not been spared by the wrath of the harsh environment and, regrettably, will also be right-sizing its staff by 35 percent across the board’” said the newspaper’s chief executive Jacob Chisese.
“It is, however, hoped that as the company’s operating fortunes change for the better in the future, some or all of the staff members affected by the downsizing would be recalled.”
