Fundraising For Cyclone Intensify As Death Toll Rise, Hundreds Missing

The private sector and general citizens of Zimbabwe have intensified fundraising efforts to help people marooned by the cyclone in the eastern parts of Zimbabwe. Unofficial tallies show that 135 people have died while hundreds are still missing many of them perceived dead.

Mobile giants Econet and Netone both have opened their platforms for fundraising and by 6pm Zimbabwe time , Econet was reporting that they had raised $RTGS 17532 from 2317 people who had donated through their platform.

A GoFundMe that was started by Freeman Chari had at last check raised US$6500  of the $10K goal in 23 hours. From the write up, the money raised will be  accounted for by Sean Mullens of One Church and  Jacque Rowe Anderson who heads the Miracle Missions in Zimbabwe.

In Chimanimani, our correspondent reports that the situation is dire as mudslides and rockslides hit many of the houses in the valley town of Chimanimani creating massive damage. Many of the houses with poor foundations were razed down. By midday today 65  bodies had been retrieved around Chimanimani. There are reports that another 51 bodies were retrieved around Copper, near the border with Mozambique.

The problems have been compounded by the downing of communication systems. The Econet booster in Chimanimani has run out of diesel and now only the Netone phones are working. There is no power in the city complicating the dire situation.
