HARARE-Godwin Gomwe ,ZANU-PF Harare provincial youth chairman  attempted to shoot himself when he heard that police were looking for him in connection with a case in which he is accused of extortion using the First Lady, Dr Grace Mugabe’s name.

In opposing bail, the prosecutor, Mr Michael Reza, told the court that Gomwe was suicidal hence the need to protect him by keeping him behind bars.

He said Gomwe attempted to shoot himself before he was disarmed by an army officer in Makuti.

After being disarmed, it is alleged, he was later found with rat poison. The pistol and rat poison are being held as exhibits by the police.

Gomwe and six other party officials are facing charges of extorting more than $46 000 from eight housing co-operatives in Glen Norah on several occasions, using the First Lady’s name.

A receipt book written “Amai Dr Grace Mugabe Housing Consortium” was produced in court as an exhibit.

Gomwe’s lawyer John Ndomene claims the charges are just part of a smear campaign from political opponents.
