Former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor, Gideon Gono has fallen on hard times and is being dragged to court for failing to pay hundreds of his former employees at his defunct Lunar Chickens.

Sources said the company has since closed shop and is operating undercover since Gono has not filed for liquidation. “They told us the company will be sold and that all the employees will be absorbed by the new owners but up to now nothing has happened,” said one of the former employees. “I am owed in excess of US$6000 in unpaid salaries and leave days.”

“We were informed that the company will be paying monthly instalments of $1000 but it only happened twice hence we have decided to approach the courts.”

Documents in possession of  this paper show that the employees will be in court on October 2 2015.

During its hey days Lunar Chickens used to be a beacon of black business entrepreneurship and most of the visiting heads of states were always taken to Gono ‘s farm for agricultural tours. However since his term expired as the RBZ governor and after failing to enter into the mainstream politics as the Manicaland Zanu PF senator Gono’s fortunes have been on a downward spiral.

“We wonder why his companies did well when he was still the governor. There is every reason to believe some state funds were being abused to run private businesses,” said the source.

In June this year , the same  Gideon Gono ’s chicken business unit, Lunar Chickens, was taken to court by Bak Logistics over unpaid storage fees amounting to $29 000.

The summons, filed under case number HC4733/15, was issued .

According to court papers, sometime between June last year and April this year, Lunar Chickens hired Bak Logistics storage facilities for an agreed fee.

“The plaintiff’s (Bak Logistics) claim against you is for $29 125,23 arising out of storage facility services rendered to defendant (Lunar Chickens) on various dates for various items,” Bak storage said in the summons.

“Despite demand, defendant has failed, neglected, denied and or delayed to pay the capital sum due to plaintiff.”

The storage company further claimed cost of suit on a legal practitioner client scale.
