Hosiah Chipanga hits hard times, trades guitars with hoes

by Liberty Dube
AGING veteran musician, Hosiah Chipanga, has temporarily traded guitars with hoes after recently migrating to his rural home in Watsomba to venture into peasant farming.

Life has not been a bed of roses for the outspoken 63-year-old artiste whose musical career has seemingly waned and in tailspin following a fall out with most promoters.

Chipanga told The Weekender that music was not sustainable hence he had to look for alternative ways of eke a living to augment the meagre income from live shows.Hosiah-Chipanga-1728x800_c

He recently confessed to this publication that he was living in isolation, alleging that local music promoters used and dumped him.

“Kana dziri mhepo ndichatombonogezwa munyama nyangwe ndiri bishop wechurch (I think I need cleansing though I am a bishop in my church)”.

He said moving to Mwoyoweshumba in Watsomba to venture into farming would only save his family from wallowing in abject poverty.

The prolific songwriter, however, vowed never to abandon music.

He revealed that he was working on a forthcoming album, Gamba due to be released early next year.

This will be his 26th project.

“I am now a maize farmer. I can’t stay in town doing nothing.

“I need to supplement my music profession by venturing into something that will put food on the table as a breadwinner. As a family man one should not run out of ideas.

“Today’s economy does not allow one to sit down and lament without finding a solution,” said Chipanga.

The Messianic Apostolic People’s Inspired Prophetic Institute (MAPIPI) church leader who does much of his preaching on social media such as Facebook, said he would not let down his fans by throwing in the towel in the music industry despite challenges attacking him left, right and centre.

“I have more than 35 years in the music industry. I have encountered numerous challenges, but I will never quit. I am working on a new project titled Gamba and is due to be released early next year,” said the Kwachu Kwachu hit-maker who could not be drawn into revealing more information concerning the project.

The once glowing aging musician is now a shadow of his former self and one wonders what really went wrong with the 2004 ZIMA Best Sungura Artiste and 2005 NAMA award winner.

One prominent promoter who requested anonymity blamed Hosiah “for talking too much and delving into politics”, something which has contributed immensely to his demise.

“Politics and music can never mix. He used to be a social commentator and he used to be an inspiration. He is talented, but he seems to be interested in politics more than music. It is now difficult to call him for shows because it may look like we are supporting his political endeavours,” said the promoter.
