Hotel Rwanda :Poor hygienic conditions force warriors accomodation shut down

THE Warriors’ accommodation conditions in Rwanda which play host to the 2016 African Nations Championship (Chan) remain unclear after authorities there shut down the hotel where the national team were booked due to “poor hygienic conditions”, two days before their arrival in the Great Lakes region.

The Warriors, who are in Group D with Zambia, Mali and Uganda, have now been booked at another hotel, Western Mountain, which was initially not meant to host any Chan team.

According to Rwandese media reports, Stipp Hotels Rubavu where the Warriors had been booked was closed on Monday morning for poor hygiene after a health inspection conducted in Rubavu district.

According to the Rubavu district mayor Jérémie Sinamenye, the hotel was shut down after it failed to comply with health standards as stipulated in the laws that govern hygiene in hotels.

“We’ve closed the hotel due to general hygiene issues. The issues range from poor hygiene in facilities like the laundry area, toilets and the septic tank that emitted odour, which inconvenienced clients. Basically, when we inspected, we found that they had faulted on at least 12 regulations on hygiene,” Sinamenye told the New Times.

Sinamenye also said they had previously advised the hotel management to improve on its hygiene and their failure to comply led to Monday’s closure.

“The teams, Zimbabwe and Mali that are supposed to stay at the hotel haven’t arrived yet but we’ve already established other options. One team will reside at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel while the other will be at the Western Mountain Hotel. Otherwise, we have done all the required inspections and apart from Stipp Hotels, the other hotels are fine,” he said.

The 23-men Warriors’ squad is scheduled to fly out of the country on board Kenyan Airways tomorrow morning. They will have a three-day rest in Rwanda before their opening clash against Zambia.

Zimbabwe and Zambia will be meeting for the 45th time since June 7, 1980, when Zambia posted a 2-1 win over the then newly independent country.

The two countries’ clashes after that have seen Chipolopolo posting 15 wins compared to the Warriors’ seven, while 22 encounters ended in stalemates.

The Warriors now look set to go into battle without any major friendly match save for the Harare City training match.
