Mamombe and other missing MDC Alliance activists found badly beaten

THE opposition MDC Alliance says its three youth leaders including Harare West legislator Joana Mamombe, who had reportedly gone missing, have been found ‘badly beaten and dumped along Bindura Road’.

The three are Cecilia Chimbiri (youth assembly national vice-chairperson), Netsai Marova (national deputy organising secretary) and Mamombe.

“Youth Assembly Ldrs C. Chimbiri, Hon. J.Mamombe & N.Marova found by villagers; badly beaten and dumped along Bindura Road. We have since rescued them with the help of @ZLHRLawyers.

“The Police also attended to the scene. They are now receiving emergency medical care,” read a statement posted by the party on Twitter Friday morning.

Earlier information yesterday said the trio were arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) personnel in Warren Park , on the Harare-Bulawayo Road, at about 1.30pm on Wednesday 13 May as they were participating in a flash demonstration.

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) sent representatives to try to locate the women and give them legal representation.

When the lawyers approached Harare Central Police Station the officer in charge said the youth leaders had not been brought there and there were no detainees with those names at the station.

The lawyers then visited more than 10 other police stations in Harare, without success.

The three women had participated in a spontaneous citizen protest in Warren Park, a high-density suburb of Harare, against the partisan distribution of food aid and the lack of an economic stimulus package from the government.

Police denied detaining the three, despite the State-owned Herald having earlier reported ZRP National Spokesperson Paul Nyathi saying the three were in custody.

“The ZRP wishes to make it clear that the MDC Alliance members who include Johanna Mamombe, Obey Sithole, Ostallous Siziba, Stanley Manyenga and Justin Chidziva who were involved in an illegal flash demonstration on 13/5/20 in Warren Park, Harare are not in police custody,” police said yesterday.

“Their lawyer has been in contact with Officer Commanding Police, Harare Province and was told to bring his clients for an interview with regards to the above cited matter. This is the official position

“Police, therefore dismisses all social media insinuations that the MDC members were either detained or are in police custody.” – Zimbabwe Voice
