Ministry takes measures to control malaria

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has completed spraying 47 districts around the country to prevent a major outbreak of malaria, an official has said.

National malaria control manager in the ministry, Joseph Mberikunashe, told The Standard that all districts prone to malaria were covered under the exercise.

He said the ministry also distributed over one million mosquito nets in malaria-prone districts such as Victoria Falls, Hwange, Binga, Beitbridge, Kariba, Mudzi and parts of Manicaland.
“We also distributed about 1,7 million mosquito nets for people to use and we hope that they will use the given material so as to reduce cases of malaria,” Mberikunashe said.

“In terms of medication we are well-stocked with the drugs in the event that people fall sick.”

According to the MOHCC disease and surveillance weekly report for week 50, over 600 people have died since the beginning of the year due to malaria.

“The cumulative figure for malaria is 496 495 cases and 667 deaths,” reads the report.

In week 50, the ministry recorded nine deaths in one week, in which one death was from the under-five-age.

“A total of 2 645 malaria cases and nine deaths were reported this week,” the report reads.

“Of the cases reported 485 cases and one death were from under the age of five years.”
