Panic As Covid19 Hits Zimbabwe Prisons

Senator Michael Carter talks to an inmate at Chikurubi maximum prison.

ZIMBABWE has recorded its first COVID-19 positive cases in prisons with the first six cases having been at Beitbridge and Plumtree prisons.
This was revealed by the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Senator Monica Mutsvangwa at a media briefing in Harare.
“We wish to advise the nation that we have now recorded positive cases in our prisons. We have three confirmed cases at Beitbridge Prison, one is an officer and the two are inmates. At Plumtree Prison, we also have two inmates who have been confirmed positive and one officer,” she said.
Senator Mutsvangwa said measures have been put in place to contain the spread of the virus as no visitors are allowed at Beitbridge and Plumtree Correctional Facilities.
“The inmates have been isolated within the facilities and officers are now in self-isolation at their homes. The institutions have also been disinfected.
Government wishes to remind the nation that we are still under lock-down. We need to decongest our public places by only going out when it is absolutely necessary,” she said.
She said government has noted an increase of both vehicular and human traffic in Central Business Districts.
“The nation is therefore reminded that Coronavirus is in our midst and our numbers are rising. It is not advisable to be in large crowds where one is exposed.
Government, together with Harare City Council is working on plans to decongest Mbare Musika through decentralization, as was the case in the decentralization of the Tobacco Auction Floors,” said Senator Mutsvangwa.-zbc
