A wave of hysteria has hit Mthunzi primary and secondary schools in Mhangura constituency, it has been reported.

The  State owned ZBC reported Wednesday that hysteria first gripped scores of pupils at Mthunzi primary school, who simultaneously felt some pinches and itches all over their bodies while at the school.

It then spread to the neighbouring Mthunzi secondary school, where affected students started scratching all over their bodies before they became possessed with demonic spirits.

When the media arrived at the secondary school, chaotic scenes characterised the institution as possessed students ran berserk around the school, with some turning violent against a faith healer (pictured in yellow robes) who was called to cleanse the school.

What was most disturbing for the community is that as soon as the affected pupils left school premises, the demonic spirits haunting them would go away.

The community has been left shell-shocked by the incident, which they say smacks of Satanism.

In the midst of the furore, accusations of witchcraft were traded with one man insinuating that the bizarre occurrence was the result of a magical spell cast on the community by a leader of a named church who allegedly wanted human blood to appease his gods as a way of attracting a large following.

A spirit medium who came to the Mthunzi farming community to reportedly cleanse the schools was picked up by police after he allegedly pinpointed a resident couple as being the source of the scourge.

The couple leads a named church in the Mthunzi community where they are also carrying out farming activities.

Following the hysteria, Mthunzi primary school had to suspend lessons.
