Sikhala arrested over Mugabe assassination plot

RETURNED MDC-T prodigal son, Job Sikhala has been arrested reportedly on allegations that he is part of a cabal linked to Vice President Joice Mujuru that has been working on a plot to eliminate President Robert Mugabe.

The arrest follows reports in the state media claiming the MDC-T politician had been recorded discussing the ouster and possible elimination of the veteran leader with emissaries from the vice president.

Sikhala has denied the allegations.

But in a post on his social networking site Facebook profile, the former St Mary’s legislator confirmed he had been arrested.

“Good friends I have been arrested at the Beitbridge Border post by officials from the President’s office. They are alleging that I am part of the crew that is after overthrowing Mugabe’s regime.

“Let’s see whether their charges will carry the order of the day in the court of law. I am ready, Zimbabweans, for the challenge,” said Sikhala.

MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu also took to the social networking site to confirm Sikhala had been arrested.

“Job ‘Wiwa’ Sikhala has been arrested by the ZRP in Beitbridge,” Gutu chipped in.

Mujuru is in the eye of a raging Zanu PF storm amid accusation she is behind a plot to oust Mugabe by force along with Labour Minister Nicholas Goche, State Security Minister Didymus Mutasa and deposed spokesperson Rugare Gumbo.

It is not the first time that Sikhala has been linked to a plot to kill Mugabe. In the run-up to the 2002 presidential poll, Sikhala along with MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai and other party activists, were implicated in the infamous plot that resulted in a marathon treason trial for which the group was later acquitted.

Mujuru is locked in a bitter succession war with Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa but, of late, her political fortunes have nosedived she was blocked from the influential Central Committee along with a host of her acolytes among them Mutasa, Goche and nine provincial chairpersons.

The Vice President has also been accused of corruption and extortion by a group of hawks angling for her removal and fronted by First Lady Grace Mugabe.NEWZIMBABWE
