The Hurungwe typist doing Grace’s bidding

ZANU PF Hurungwe East MP Sarah Mahoka describes her career as a marketer and farmer.

The 50-year-old mother of three lists going to church as one of her hobbies.

She was first elected into the National Assembly on a Zanu PF ticket in March 2008 and rose to prominence when she claimed in court that she was a Grade 2 drop-out.

But according to her profile filed at Parliament, she went through Nyatiso Primary School and Goredema Secondary School.

Mahoka also did book-keeping and receptionist courses, but is more known for being a rubble rouser in Zanu PF circles.

Last Wednesday she left tongues wagging when she laid on Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa, accusing him of harbouring ambitions to succeed President Robert Mugabe.

The goading happened live on ZBC TV and in front of the soon-to-be-92-year-old Zanu PF leader Mugabe, First Lady Grace and Mnangagwa himself.

She labelled the feared Midlands strongman a duck, for allegedly folding his hands while his supporters gunned for Mugabe’s post.

The question on everyone’s lips after watching the drama was “who sent Sarah Mahoka?”

Former Zanu PF Mashonaland West chairperson Temba Mliswa — who was dragged by Mahoka to court in 2013 after an alleged violent altercation — is convinced that she was sent by Grace.

“Mahoka is nothing. I made Mahoka,” he said last week. “She caused my arrest on trumped-up charges on the instructions of the First Lady, Mahoka told me that.

“Mahoka lost elections for the women’s league provincial chairperson post to Constance Shamu and I brought her back from the cold before recommending her for a national position.

“Mahoka is part of a group that includes Edna Madzongwe and they are very close to Grace.

“Mahoka is a very poor farmer and uses the name of the First Lady to gain influence in the province,” said Mliswa.

Mahoka was part of the Zanu PF women’s league led by Oppah Muchinguri that spearheaded the expulsion of former vice-president Joice Mujuru in 2014.

She became a permanent feature in Grace’s entourage as the First Lady toured the country to ratchet up pressure against Mujuru and was famed for gyrating at the rallies.

Mahoka reportedly broke ranks with Muchinguri soon after Mujuru was shown the door. She is believed to have joined hands with Madzongwe and Public Service minister Prisca Mupfumira under an alliance known as the “Golden Girls”.

Mugabe seemed to be taking Mahoka seriously, promising to investigate the issues she raised in what could be an indication that the First Family knew about the whole script.

However, Mliswa — who was unceremoniously kicked out of Zanu PF for allegedly supporting Mujuru — said Mugabe had lost the plot by condoning the behaviour of people like Mahoka.
“Mugabe has lost the plot and Zanu PF cannot recover from this,” he said.

“We cannot have such a low-ranking member confronting the VP of the party and country.”

That the First Lady decided to go for the jugular against Mnangagwa a few days after, accusing him of plotting to kill her children and the “ultimate sin” of harbouring ambitions of taking over from Mugabe, could have removed any doubt about who the force behind Mahoka is.
