Masvingo becomes the third province to host the prestigious traditional dance competition after Mashonaland East Province and Matabeleland South.

About 10 groups from the province are set to battle at Chagarapasi Beerhall in Chiredzi with the winner making it to the finals.

This year’s competition will feature popular dances such as the traditional mchongoyo, mbakumba, setapa, bira and nyau.

Winners will pocket $1 000 as they prepare to battle it out in the final.

The prestigious event has been hailed as it promotes the development of culture and heritage.

Various groups that take part in the event represent different cultures through their dances.

Traditional dance is culturally important in Zimbabwe and when different groups meet for a performance excitement, competition and thrills are always expected.

For years now the competition has managed to bring together various groups of many traditional styles. It is a collaboration between National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Traditional Dance Association and Delta Beverages.

Delta Beverages marketing manager Patricia Murambinda recently said they have been committed to the arts for over 50 years.

“As Delta Beverages we value the privilege of promoting and celebrating our culture and heritage. This is part of what it means to be Zimbabwean.

“Through our Chibuku brand we’ve been committed to the arts for over 50 years now,” said Murambinda.

She said Chibuku had proved to be a favourite brew for many people.

“Chibuku is the people’s beer and the provincial competitions in Chiredzi are where people should be on Saturday. Our consumers will enjoy great entertainment free of charge in a safe environment,” she said.
