Tsvangirai Amends Constitution to Accommodate 3 Vice Presidents

The Movement for Democratic Change formation of former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s national council and national executive have reportedly amended its constitution in order to accommodate three vice presidents.

This was adopted at Wednesday’s meeting at the party’s headquarters in Harare where both the national executive and the national council met.

Party secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora confirmed the changes to the constitution, saying that the national council meeting was as good as a congress.

“What was agreed is that we no longer have a constitution which is questionable, that is the first one. And we now have a constitution that today sitting as congress also agreed. The second one was that the president explained his appointment of the two vice presidents and the logic behind his appointments,” Mwonzora said.

Mwonzora said the national council had two agenda items to discuss, namely the party constitution and the appointments.

The appointments have caused a lot of friction in the party with indications that vice president Thokozane Khupe is still not happy about the move.

Sources said she was still unhappy even if the appointments have now been formalized through some of the party’s top decision making bodies outside congress.-VOA
