UK: Violent thug jailed for brutalizing ex-partner

JEALOUS Dallas Mpala, originally from Zimbabwe, subjected his ex-partner to a violent beating in her own home.

The 30-year-old accused Gemma Holland of sleeping with other men and punched, kicked and bit her leaving her with a broken vertebrae.

Now Mpala has been jailed for three years at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court with the judge branding him a ‘lazy, indolent, violent parasite’.

Prosecutor Richard Davenport said Holland has known the defendant for 13 years and the pair have four children together.

But their relationship broke down in 2009 after he was jailed for two years for punching her, slapping her and whipping her with a belt.

On Sunday, April 20 Holland went to a party where Mpala was and he threw a can of beer at her.

After visiting a nightclub Holland returned home to find the defendant outside with a bottle of wine.

She let him inside and after she went to bed he followed her up and asked her for sex. She said no and he left.

But Holland was woken by the defendant punching her head.

Davenport said: “He was shouting and screaming. He accused her of sleeping with other men and punched her to her head. She felt incredible pain. He was so angry she feared for her life.

“He launched himself at her like a wild animal and bit her cheek. She was crying and begging him to stop. He said he wanted to kill her.”

Holland tried to leave but he told her not to so she sat on the bed in an attempt to calm him down.

Davenport said: “She felt pain to her neck. She believed he kicked her. He grabbed her phone and smashed it on the floor.”

Holland was eventually able to escape.

She had a bruised and swollen right eye which she could not open, a bruised nose, swollen left cheek, marks and bumps on her head and a sore back. She was later found to have three fractures of her vertebrae.

Mpala, of Bridgewater Court, Hanley, who has several previous convictions for assaulting Holland, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Joanne Wallbanks, mitigating, said the defendant came to Britain from Zimbabwe and witnessed domestic violence as he was growing up.

“He has an unenviable history of violence towards the injured party but has no offences since 2009,” said Wallbanks.

Recorder Nigel Daly said Mpala targeted his victim and added the kicking and biting equated to use of a weapon.

The judge said: “You do not work and spend your time drinking and taking drugs while sponging off your (current) partner. You are a lazy, indolent, violent parasite.”

Mpala was also made the subject of an indefinite restraining order preventing him having any contact with Holland
