Xenophobia:calls mount to prosecute King Zwelithini for crimes against humanity: Exiles Forum

Calls are mounting for South Africa to prosecute Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini for his alleged utterances against foreign nationals living in South Africa.
This follows the killings of some of these nationals; increased violence as well as looting of foreign owned shops. Two weeks ago, Zwelithini was quoted as saying, “all foreigners must pack their bags and leave the country.”
This week non South Africans were subjected to gross human rights abuses with five reportedly having been burnt to death while thousands have been displaced.
Since Monday Durban was turned into a war zone as police engaged in running battles with the South Africans.
Xenophobia also spread to Johannesburg on Wednesday morning as foreign owned shops were looted in broad day light.
Zimbabwe Exiles Forum director, Gabriel Shumba said there are growing calls from the civic society and human rights groups to arrest Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithi.
“If South Africa does not prosecute king Zulu then the only alternative is to report him to the International Criminal Court (ICC) so that he can be prosecuted for crimes against humanity,” Shumba saidxeno
The Zulu king received support from President Jacob Zuma’s son, Edward, who insisted that all foreigners living in South Africa should be deported.
As foreigners continue to be killed, South African police minister, Nathi Nhleko says he will not yet deploy the army to address the xenophobic attacks in Durban.
Speaking on Morning Live on Wednesday, Mr Nhleko said government is working with different stakeholders to resolve the issue.
He said they are looking for long term interventions that will avoid a recurrence of the attacks.
On Tuesday, shops belonging to Ethiopians and Somalians in Durban’s West Street were looted.
Police had to use tear gas to disperse the mob after tyres were burnt.
Police also said they will arrest any foreigners who retaliate when being attacked by the armed groups.
Meanwhile, the country’s Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has dismissed reports that he has apologised to King Goodwill Zwelithini for reprimanding him over the comments he made about foreign nationals.
