EMBATTLED former vice president Joice Mujuru’s woes are set to mount after police Thursday were granted search warrants by a Harare magistrate’s court to investigate her vast businesses empire.
Police sources said Thursday detectives from Harare CID frauds squad were dispatched to the court to obtain the search warrants, which would allow the law enforcement agents lawful access into her
“Search warrants were signed; anytime expect to hear that police have invaded her businesses,” said the source.
Some of the businesses targeted were Harare food outlet, Chicken Slice, in which Mujuru has allegedly used gospel musician Tawanda Mutyebere as her front.
Koala Park abattoir which is located along the Harare-Chitungwiza highway and NMB bank are also targeted in the looming probe.
Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba could not be reached for comment.
However, previous attempts to seek comment from her on why police had not acted on allegations by first lady Grace Mugabe suggesting Mujuru was corrupt, also failed to yield after Charamba repeatedly requested questions emailed to her which she ignored.
Mujuru and dozens of top Zanu PF officials linked to her faction were dramatically bundled out of the ruling party, accused of plotting a coup against the long serving leader President Robert Mugabe.
They were subsequently barred from contesting the country’s central committee positions, something that would have ensured they kept their membership in the Zanu PF politburo.
The impending search on Mujuru could culminate in her arrest on corruption charges, which could open yet another episode in the former vice president’s spectacular fall from grace.
The First Lady has accused the ousted Zanu PF top official of extortion and theft of diamonds from Chiadzwa, allegations which Mujuru denies.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a Zanu PF source said Thursday President Mugabe and his anti-Mujuru backers felt the former VP still posed a threat to their bid to retain control of Zanu PF, adding the plot to stick corruption charges against her were meant to totally destroy her once promising political career.
