He will share the stage with iconic Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie — who is a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Special Envoy and 2017 UNCA Global Citizen of the Year — UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutierrez and UN diplomats.

Mwareya (33) is online editor of the Women Taboos Radio and Africa correspondent for Her Zimbabwe, Rural Reporters and a regular columnist for the Financial Times and Thomson Reuters. In 2015 he became the first journalist in the world to win the UN/ILO Global Migration Fair Reporting Prize. In 2016 he became the first Zimbabwean journalist to win the UNCA media prize and was posted to the UN General Assembly in September 2017 as a Dag Hammarskjold Journalism Fellow.

The UNCA dinner has been held since 1948.

UNCA is a professional organisation of over 200 news correspondents and producers from dozens of countries.

UNCA president Sherwin Bryce Pease said the awards “recognise and encourage excellence in reporting on the United Nations, its affiliated agencies, organisations and missions”.

Mwareya expressed joy at the global honour.

“I am grateful for this chance to represent the best of what Zimbabwean journalists can offer. This for me will be a chance to show an esteemed global audience and the UN Secretary-General that Zimbabwe is a new country.”-Newsday
