A Zimbabwean youngster has broken into the first team of a top rugby club in the UK.

Masimbaashe Matongo (19)  made his debut for Hull FC against Wigan last Friday. His coach, Lee Radford, is confident he can hack it at first-team level.

Matongo came to the UK at the age of five, before taking up rugby league at the age of 15. Despite being a latecomer to the sport, the forward is said to have impressed team-mates this year.

Matongo, a trainee accountant said :“It was honestly the best feeling of my life, just to get out there with the first team and play at such a stadium was a big honour for me.”

“I couldn’t believe how loud the fans were, even though there weren’t that many they really impacted the game. I couldn’t control my happiness when they started chanting my name, it was like a dream come true.”

“He (Matongo) is a fresh faced youngster,” Radford said. He was playing prop for Hull Wyke open age 14 months ago. We took a punt on him and brought him in on trial. He’s polite and a smart kid for a front rower, he doesn’t fit the stereotype.”-HullDailyMail
