Zimbabwean journalist found hanged had been recommended for counselling

Mourned … Godwin Muzari is believed to have taken his own life

HARARE – Godwin Muzari, the entertainment editor of The Herald newspaper has been found hanged at his home.

The 40-year-old had been battling some “personal demons” and is believed to have committed suicide, his family said.

The Herald had made a decision that he should go for counselling following a meeting with his family, it was revealed.

“He told me a number of personal and confidential issues, but I didn’t know that it would come to this,” his elder brother Israel Muzari said.

Muzari had, like most journalists at the newspaper, largely been working from home since the coronavirus lockdown announced in March. He however reported for work on Monday and Tuesday, but was not heard from again.

His brother said he last spoke to him on Monday, and decided to check on him at his home on Thursday afternoon.

He found Godwin hanging from a roof truss in one of the rooms at his Waterfalls home.

Herald editor Hatred Zenenga said: “He was a brilliant writer. Our newsroom will be poorer without him.”

Muzari had a wife and three children.-zimlive
