Zimbabwean woman seeks assistance to acquire master’s degree in Gender Studies

Hello! My name is Linda Gabriel. I am a Theatre Maker, Spoken Word Artist and Activist from Harare, Zimbabwe. I am applying for a master’s degree in Gender Studies at the University of Oslo.

The program starts in August 2017. Tuition is free for international students. However during the application period students are required to have their own funds for living expenses. The amount set by the University is NOK 103 950 (€11 000). My Goal of €12 000 is based on this amount plus travel expenses.

As an activist, I have been using the stage to tell untold stories, issues of gender based violence, sexuality, forced child marriages, and sex work, taking my art beyond the stage and into the world.

This Masters degree will be my key to accessing communities that foster social cohesion, peace and reduction of poverty in the context of cultural diversity, freedom of expression, gender equality and improved human rights. Investing in my educational goals is investing in the future of these communities. After my studies, I will return to Zimbabwe to work with more young women in my community.

As someone with a BA in Applied Drama and Theatre from University of Witswatersrand Johannesburg, who is a working artist, it can be difficult to get organizations to hire me for outreach programs.

My goal is to be more involved on the grassroots level in community development, women and girl child empowerment, educational programs, and policy making, with organizations aiding girls and women in remote areas, marginalized and minority communities
