  • Phillip Rankin and his family have farmed in Zimbabwe for decades
  • Their farm has been taken from them and given to Sylvester Nyatsuro
  • Mr Rankin was handcuffed and dragged away from the property last week
  • Police have ‘taken over the home’ and are ‘stopping them using the farm’
  • New owner originally from Zimbabwe but now works as GP in Nottingham

Zimbabwean exiles in the UK are to protest outside a clinic in Nottingham run by a Zimbabwean immigrant doctor who has seized one of the last white-owned farms in Zimbabwe.

Dr Sylvester Nyatsuro, a British citizen, claims that the Mugabe regime has told him he can have thefarm although he has been resident in England for more than 15 years. His wife, Veronica is related to Mugabe’s wife Grace.

The farm has been besieged by hired thugs for months but last Friday armed police forced their way in and took away the owner Zimbabwean-born Phillip Rankin who was about to harvest a crop worth up to £240,000.

The demonstration is organized by the Zimbabwe Vigil which has been protesting outside the Zimbabwe Embassy in London every Saturday since October 2002 in support of human rights in Zimbabwe.

Vigil Co-ordinator Fungayi Mabhunu said: ‘The Nyatsuros have grown rich on the NHS. What do they think they are doing depriving a productive farmer of his home and his livelihood just because he is white? Zimbabwe needs farmers not hypocritical absentee landlords. Nottingham must say that now that the Nyatsuros have the farm they must go and work the land there. Instead it will be a glorified holiday home while Zimbabwe starves.’

The Zimbabwe Vigil is running the following petition to David Cameron: Zimbabwean exiles in the United Kingdom and sympathisers are appalled by the behaviour of Dr Sylvester Nyatsuro and his wife Veronica who run theWillows Medical Centre in Nottingham. Dr Nyatsuro is a British citizen, long resident in this country, yet he has illegally seized a farm in Zimbabwe owned by a white Zimbabwean farmer, Mr Phillip Rankin, who bought it with the approval of the Mugabe government. Dr Nyatsuro and his wife are reported to be connected to Grace Mugabe. We are puzzled why a British doctor should want a farm in Zimbabwe since he and his wife are apparently in full-time employment here and have no known farming expertise in a country facing starvation. We ask your government to consider revoking Dr Nyatsuro’s citizenship on the grounds that ‘it was obtained by means of fraud, false representation or concealment of any material fact’ (see: Deprivation of British citizenship and withdrawal of passport facilities –file:///Users/GG/Downloads/SN06820%20(1).pdf: House of Commons Library). We also question his suitability to run an NHS clinic in Nottingham while farming in Zimbabwe.

Date and time: Friday 5th February from 12 noon – 3 pm.

Venue: The Willows Medical Centre, Church Street, Carlton, Nottingham NG4 1BJ.

What the hell is white farmers still doing in Zimbabwe? There is no law and order in that country since Mugabe stole the election.

Do what the white farmers do close to settlements in South Africa. Employ a Sangoma to poison the fruits and cattle likely to be stolen. Make sure the Sangoma has a lot to lose if he cheats on you.

glad that action is being taken against these thieves who exploit the bounty of the UK yet want to grab a poor hard-working farmer’s livelihood – and also deprive hundreds of native Zimbabweans of work and a home. They disgust me
