President Robert Mugabe, who is also the outgoing chairman of the African Union, has commended Tanzania for accommodating Zimbabwean liberators during the struggle for the country’s independence.
Speaking during the launch of a book: ‘Julius Nyerere -Asante Sana, Thank You Mwalimu’ in Harare today, President Mugabe said Zimbabwe will always be grateful to Tanzanians who accommodated freedom fighters who stayed in various bases in their country.

He said Tanzania under the late Tanzanian founder and President Mwalimu Julius Nyerere also carried the burdens of liberation fighters from Namibia, South Africa, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau.
The book is dedicated to the life and works of Cde Nyerere.

President Mugabe has described the late founding Tanzanian President as an eminent symbol of unity and freedom.
Mugabe said he was overjoyed that a building under construction to house the African Union Peace and Security Council will be named after Nyerere.
President Mugabe also revealed that many liberation movements in Africa used Mwalimu Nyerere’s links with China to also establish relationships with Beijing.

The book was co-published by Southern African Research and Documentation Centre, House of Books, African Publishing Group and Mkuki Na Nyota of Tanzania.
The book is a compilation of speeches by Nyerere and articles by scholars.
