20 000 men go under the knife in Midlands

OVER 20 000 men underwent voluntary male circumcision in the Midlands Province last year against a target of 30 400 as the Ministry of Health steps up efforts to fight the spread of HIV and Aids, Southern Eye has reported.

Midlands provincial TB and HIV officer, Tshebukani Moyo said Gokwe North recorded the highest number of males circumcised at 4 375 while Zvishavane had the least at 1 628 during the same period last year.

He said the Health ministry faced challenges of late disbursement of funds and having few vehicles in carrying out the exercise.

“We had 20 829 males circumcised last year against a target of 30 400,” Moyo said at a National Aids Council provincial stakeholders meeting in Gweru yesterday.

Government adopted male circumcision in 2009 as part of its efforts to reduce incidents of new HIV infections.

Health experts say male circumcision reduces the transmission of the HIV virus by up to 60%.

Government is targeting to circumcise 1,3 million men between 2012 and 2018. Latest statistics however show that 31% of the targeted population has already been circumcised.-SE
