Zambians go to the polls on January 20 with ten candidates vying to replace the late Patriotic Front leader Michael Sata who died in October last year.
While there is a relative peaceful environment two days before the polls, Zambians have shown great maturity in handling the pre-election period as compared to Zimbabwe.
Sadc observer mission deployed only 65 members in the country’s ten provinces as compared to the 400 strong members observation team that was deployed in Zimbabwe ahead of the 2013 elections.
Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZSEN) director Rindai Vava Chipfunde said Zambia is doing well.
“Zambia set better precedent in last elections like simple accreditation of observers without restrictions. It has now decentralised it to districts. There is also the use of ICTs in results management which improves transparency,” Vava said.
“There is also relatively peaceful environment.”
However investigations by TheZimbabwenewslive reveal that violence and fears of rigging have marred the Zambian poll preparations.
“A bus has been stoned in one of the locations in the city and everyone is tense as the results may not be accepted due to rigging allegations going round,” said Ronald Chiuya’ a tax driver in Lusaka.
