Accident claims six pupils

Six children who were travelling to school from Mberengwa to Zvishavane on Friday morning have died in a fatal road accident which occurred along the Bulawayo-Zvishavane highway.

Five died on the spot, while one died on admission at Zvishavane hospital.

 

Another six who were critically injured have since been transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, while 10 are admitted at Zvishavane hospital.

 

The accident occurred when a Toyota Granvia which transports the children to school veered off the road and rolled several times before it landed on its road.
The vehicle had 22 children on board.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to ZBC over the phone say the driver was speeding and lost control of the vehicle which then veered off the road and rolled several times before landing on its roof.
National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba has warned drivers against speeding saying the practice results in the unnecessary loss of innocent lives.
The legislator for Mberengwa North Cde Tafanana Zhou has sent his deepest condolences to the families that lost their children in the accident and wished the 16 injured a speedy recovery.
Midlands Minister of State Cde Jason Machaya says the province is in mourning following the loss of young promising lives.
