Actuary Marjorie Ngwenya , the chief risk officer at Old Mutual’s African operations in Johannesburg is to become the new president of The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), after setting a record as the first IFoA president-elect from outside UK in 2016.
She will officially take over the post in June 2017 , from outgoing president from Colin Wilson, the UK’s Deputy Government Actuary.
After a successful career with Mazars in London as a director with experience in both consulting and reinsurance roles ,she has served four years as a member of the IFoA’s Audit and Risk Committee and is a current member of the Management Board. She also served as Head of Risk and Governance at Acorn Fund Management, Senior Risk Actuary at Swiss Re, Manager at Deloitte and Business Development Manager at GenRe.
As an overseas member of the IFoA Council, Ngwenya acted as a Faculty ambassador and connects with IFoA’s overseas membership.
She served as editor of The Actuary magazine for three years until 2011. She is also a trustee of the Legal Resources Trust in South Africa.
Commenting on her election last year , Ngwenya said: “I am looking forward to continuing the important work done by those who have held the role before me, and to bringing the benefits of actuarial science to more people around the world.
“The actuarial profession is continuing to expand into new disciplines and I look forward to contributing to this impressive work to move the profession forward.”
The former Chisipite Girls High student was awarded a Rising Star of the Year in the SA Business Club Business Awards 2011.
