Dhlamini-Zuma Attempted Assassination Exposed

Leaked intelligence documents have revealed a plot to assassinate African Union Commission chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma in Ethiopia after she assumed the position in 2012.

According to the cables, South African intelligence officials were alerted to an imminent threat to Dlamini-Zuma’s life on 22 October 2012.
The documents reveal that Sudan was suspected of being behind the plot with South African officials admitting they did not have time to neutralise the threat and apprehend those involved.
Meanwhile, the South African parliament has expressed concern over the issue, with parliament’s joint standing committee on intelligence saying they will initiate an investigation and call relevant people to account.
Dr Dlamini Zuma assumed the position of AU Commission chairperson in October 2012 in a move hailed as a positive development in the history of the AU Commission to be chaired by a woman.
