The head of Home Affairs’ Immigration services at the Beit Bridge border post, Elvis Mavhungu, has applied to be allowed to go back to his work pending an investigation of corruption charges against him.
Mavhungu and 14 other suspects including three border officials were arrested by the Hawks in Limpopo last month at the border with Zimbabwe and around nearby Musina.
The Hawks have opposed his application.
The suspects allegedly received bribes in the form of goods and cash from foreigners to have their travel documents processed illegally.
Mavhungu was allegedly given two pairs of shoes worth R3 000 each to illegally process a passport of a foreign national.
The department of Home Affairs has since terminated his salary pending police investigation and court processes.
He asked the court to relax the bail condition which stops from visiting the border gate.
He told the court that if he is allowed to go back to his work place he won’t interfere with witnesses.
The court also heard that his wife and son are also employed at the Immigration section of the border.
The case was postponed to Wednesday the 6th for a ruling on his application.-sabc
