Bloody diamonds:Zimbabwe man loses private parts for unlawful entry

A CHIADZWA man had his testicles bludgeoned allegedly by security details, who accused him of unlawful entry into the diamond fields.

Fungai Ziduche (33), from Zvinodavanhu village in Chiadzwa, narrated his ordeal to NewsDay Weekender after filing a police report at Marange Police Station under RRB number 2591399.

Ziduche, who was writhing in pain at his sister’s house in Mutare, said doctors told to him that restoration by medical intervention might be impossible.

This was after he underwent an operation at Mutare General Hospital last Tuesday, with the doctors saying his left testicle was no longer functional, while the right one had a 3cm cut.

He said on the fateful day on February 26, he was sleeping in his cousin’s car at Tenda shops when four police officers — two in plain clothes — asked him what he was doing.

After explaining that he was in his home area, he said the police asked to see his national identity card.

“They took me to what they called Mbada Diamonds base. I was told to remove all my clothes and lie facing downwards.

They started whipping me. When I tried to rise up, I lost control and felt like I was blacking out. When I tried to crawl away from them, they beat me on my private parts,” he said.

“I told them that they had severely injured me and they said they didn’t care.”

He said the police officers later took him to Mukwada Police Station, from where he was taken to St Andrews Clinic and referred to Mutare General Hospital.

The incident happened just a few days after diamond mining companies operating in Chiadzwa were ordered to vacate the area after failing to renew their licences.

Ziduche said he has been receiving money from the police officers, but it was too little to cover his medical bills.
He said doctors at Mutare General Hospital were shocked by his condition and recommended that he makes a police report.

However, police in Mutare asked him to make a report in Marange where the incident happened.
Ziduche’s sister, Kudzinetsa, was in tears over her brother’s condition.

“The situation is not improving and the doctors said it will be difficult for him to recover,” she said.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba could not be reached for comment yesterday.

After the government ejected the diamond mining companies in Chiadzwa last month, a series of mishaps have been witnessed.
