Bribe Hiding Cop Nabbed By Colleagues at Harare Roadblock

Harare-A Police constable stationed at Avondale Police Station Traffic section was arrested for receiving US$13 at a roadblock along Lomagundi Road in Harare.

The cop, Robert Sithole who resides at No. 4464 Tynwald North, was arrested by his fellow workmates whom he was manning the roadblock with after he was spotted stashing some money in the grass on the roadside.

He was taken to the Harare Magistrates Court where he was charged with criminal abuse of office as a public officer.

The State, represented by Progress Maringamoyo, had it that on December 20 at around 0800 hours, Sithole was deployed along Lomagundi Road along with eight other Police Officers including two officers from the Zimbabwe NAtional Army.

It was said that Sithole was assigned to stop vehicles and receipt tickets to traffic rules offenders. He was also tasked to account for the money he would have received for the fines.

During the course of their duties, Sergeant Chikwadze and Corporal Chimutashua reportedly observed Constable Sithole collecting money from motorists without issuing some receipts.

It was also alleged that he was seen making several movements from the roadblock going to the grass wich was on the roadside.

Constable Sithole’s actions raised the other cops’ suspicions as it was not consistent with his assigned duty of receipting money.

Sergeant Mudzingwa who was the member in charge at the roadblock reportedly questioned Sithole over his movements.

The court also heard that Sgt Mudzingwa also instructed the other two cos to search in the grass and the ops founds US$13 hidden in the grass.

It was said that Cst Sithole denied ever hiding the money in the grass.

He was later taken to court when he appeared before Magistrate Batanai Madzingira charged with abuse of office as a public officer.
