Bus Accident Claims Three

Three people died while several others were seriously injured when a Tombs Cross-border Bus they were travelling in sideswiped with a haulage truck, resulting in the driver careening out of control before veering off the road and overturning landing on its roof.TOMBS-640x320

The incident occurred around 4.30 am near Lundi Bridge along the Zvishavane-Gweru highway.

According to eyewitnesses, the Gweru bound bus which had 60 people onboard, was coming from Beitbridge when it sideswiped with a haulage truck which had overlapping pipes that ripped off the windscreen of the bus resulting in the driver losing control.

The driver of the haulage truck did not stop after the accident.

A survivor, Mr Aaron Mangoma said after the driver lost control of the bus, it swerved off the road and overturned before landing on its roof killing three on the spot.

“It was around 4.30 am and we were approaching Lundi Bridge when a pipe overlapping from a haulage truck cargo hit the bus’s windscreen and the bus swerved off the road and it overturned landing upside down.

Three people died on the spot and several others were seriously injured,” he said.

When The Herald arrived at the scene six injured passengers whose condition seemed critical were being taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital while food stuffs and other goods were scattered all over the place.

Police were also attending the scene while members of the fire brigade were assisting trapped passengers out of the wreckage.

The bodies of the dead passengers were taken to Zvishavane District Hospital Mortuary

Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko referred all questions to National Spokeperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi.
