DeMbare, Bosso get their prize money

DYNAMOS and Highlanders yesterday received their prize money for participating in the Gushungo Victory Cup on Sunday at the National Sports Stadium.

DeMbare lifted the Cup when they beat Highlanders 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time of an entertaining tie to maintain their dominance on Bosso.

The winners got US$45 000 while the runners-up pocketed US$35 000.

The Gushungo Victory Cup was organised by students led by Blessed Mushando, who was the chairperson of the organising committee, to celebrate President Mugabe’s victory in the July harmonised elections last year.

And yesterday Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Gushungo Victory Cup patron, presented the two teams with their prize money at his offices in Harare.

Speaking during the presentation, Mnangagwa said they were happy to know that young people were behind the President.

“Actually, this Gushungo Victory Cup tournament was an idea conceived by students and they approached me to be their patron.

“We are very happy that generation, at that age, appreciates the leadership of President Mugabe and, in particular, celebrating the victory of last year under his leadership. So, we are very grateful that we have a younger generation who appreciate the goings-on in our country.

“Secondly, I would want to thank the two teams who accepted to participate in this tournament and also ZIFA for allowing us to hold the match.

“We are very grateful for facilitation of the match.” Mnangagwa also hailed the two teams for a good show on Sunday.

“The game was very beautiful. It was very nice. The President said he watched it on TV throughout, he was able to watch it, he was very happy with what happened yesterday (Sunday),” said Mnangagwa.

ZIFA chief executive Jonathan Mashingaidze said it was an honour to be part of the celebrations.

“We feel honoured to be invited to be part of the big celebrations. As football we are fully behind the Zim-Asset and we will soon be rolling out initiatives in support of the Zim-Asset,” said Mashingaidze.

Dynamos chairman Kenny Mubaiwa, who received the money on behalf of the club, said they were happy with their achievements this year.

“I think I am very happy we won the Gushungo Cup yesterday. This is one of the trophies that we were expecting to win because so far we have got the league title, we have got the Bob90 (Super Cup) and we are also hoping to clinch the Mbada Cup as well.

“I can say by winning all these trophies it shows that Dynamos is a big institution. And we hope to continue winning trophies, which is good for our team.”

Dynamos will, however, miss out on the Champions League next year after failing to secure enough resources for the tournament. Highlanders’ committee member, Onet Sibanda, who received the prize money on behalf of his side, said they were humbled to be part of the Gushungo Victory Cup.

“The season has come to an end, indeed this season was not good for us, we performed below par although all things happen for a reason.

“We hope next year our things will be in good shape. “The match between Highlanders and Dynamos, we played very well, that shows next year we will be a team not just to beat but will be a team to be counted among the best teams in the country. “Though we are still one of the biggest teams in the country we have not been performing on the field,” Sibanda said. The presentation was also attended by the permanent secretary for the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Virginia Mabhiza, and Prosecutor-General, Johannes Tomana.
