President Robert Mugabe returned to Zimbabwe on Thursday after more than five weeks on holiday — but his wife was not with him, state radio reported.
“The first lady has been ill and was discharged from hospital earlier this week,” Zimbabwean Power FM quoted the long-time Zimbabwean leader as saying.
State broadcaster ZBC reported that Grace Mugabe, 49, underwent surgery to remove her appendix and came out of hospital on Tuesday.
The first couple have been in the Far East since mid-December.
Mugabe turns 91 next month. His wife has been the subject of controversy in the last three weeks following claims she is behind the attempted evictions of up to 150 families on a farm in central Mazowe district.
The first lady, who is now the head of the ruling Zanu-PF party’s women’s league, apparently wants to set up a game park on Manzou Estate.
