RUSTENBURG – Rustenburg will never be the same after the local government elections, Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader Julius Malema said on Thursday.
“We are ushering in a new government. Rustenburg will never be the same, we are going to turn it into a construction site, building roads and providing basic services.
Give us only five years, you will see results within two years. We do not need 20 years,” he told party supporters and members at the Rustenburg taxi rank.
“We are going to uproot corruption in this municipality [Rustenburg]. Moss Phakoe was killed for exposing corruption.”
Phakoe, a councillor in the Rustenburg local municipality, was gunned downed at his home in Rustenburg Noord in March 14, 2009, after he had handed over a dossier detailing corruption in the Rustenburg municipality to high-ranking African National Congress (ANC) officials.
He also handed the dossier to former co-operative governance minister Sicelo Shiceka.
Malema said EFF-led municipalities would build better houses, and provide free water and electricity for pensioners and unemployed people.
“We are going to build proper houses with a passage and a flushing toilet. We want to offer parents an opportunity to touch each other without children disturbing them, that is why we will not build a house without a passage.
“Liberate yourself. You have the power in your hands. The only thing the ANC was able to do was to remove the police and soldiers from the street. We now sleep peacefully without the police harassing us, we even take selfies with the police in the streets,” he said to the laughter from the crowd.
“Stop burning schools and clinics during protests, when you go home the school and clinic are destroyed and the mayor and the councillor remain. In the EFF we fight in a dignified way, you have the power to remove them, vote them out.”
He told the crowd that President Jacob Zuma would be arrested and put in jail.
“Zuma is going to prison. We are going to arrest and put him in jail, and take Nkandla and turn it into a college. There is nothing that stops us from taking Nkandla.”
He said the only thing that stopped Zuma from going to prison was that he was the State president
A large crowd of EFF supporters and members had turned up to listen to Malema at the Rustenburg taxi rank on the last leg of his three-day campaign in the North West province where he was drumming up support for the EFF in the lead up to the August 3 local government election.
Malema was also scheduled to address community meetings in Marikana, Letlhabile near Brits and Hebron near Ga-Rankuwa.
