US Internet giant Google has launched a movie streaming service to a swathe of countries across sub-Saharan Africa, allowing users to either buy or rent digital titles on-demand.
Google Play Movies is now available in Angola, Benin, Botswana, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Mali, Malta, Mauritius, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Hollywood blockbusters Jurassic World, Fifty Shades of Grey and The Lego Movie are among the films available, with pricing varying according to how recently titles were released.
TV shows are not yet part of the transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) service in Africa, although Google does currently make them available to users in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US.
The move comes two months after the regional launch of music streaming service Google Play Music, and a month after the arrival of subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) giant Netflix in the African market.
