HARARE-Zanu PF national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere and the party leader and president Robert Mugabe are set to clash in the forthcoming politburo meeting over the Harare East by election candidates which spilled into the courts last week.
Investigations by the Zimbabwenewslive.com revealed that Kasukuwere has been instrumental in pushing Terence Mukupe’s candidature ahead of Mugabe’s favourite Mavis Gumbo.
Gumbo is a close ally of Mugabe and close sources said she has been close to the first family to the extent that first lady Grace Mugabe sometimes used to send her to accompany Bona to her University in Asia.
“Kasukuwere has clashed with Mugabe because Gumbo has always been very close to the first family,” the source said.
“She sometimes accompanies the first family children to school and every 21st movement birthday celebrations she is in charge of Mugabe’s birthday cake,” the source said.
“It remains to be seen how Mugabe will deal with the matter because there is no way he can betray Gumbo.”
Top government sources also said last Thursday at the airport Kasukuwere was instructed to put his house in order following the court’s ruling that Zanu PF will send two candidates to the by election following Mukupe’s successful court bid to contest in the by election.
Mukupe approached the High Court after Zanu-PF secretary for administration Ignatius Chombo wrote to the Nomination Court requesting for the withdrawal of his candidature in favour of Gumbo.
Mukupe, who had won the primary election and had a letter of confirmation to the Nomination Court written by party secretary for the Commissariat Saviour Kasukuwere, had already successfully filed his papers when he was disqualified.
He approached the High Court which ruled that his papers were in order and there was no basis for the Nomination Court to reject them.
While Gumbo enjoys support of the first family, Mukupe has also been a close Kasukuwere ally who is said to be a director in the small and medium enterprises Ministry.
Mukupe was visible during the launches of all community share ownership schemes which were pushed by Kasukuwere during his days as the indigenisation minister.
“He (Mukupe) has always featured in Kasukuwere programmes such as the launches of community share ownership schemes,” another Zanu PF insider said.
“The Harare East saga will be a litmus test for Kasukuwere to resolve the fresh factional flames that are once again widening the Zanu PF cracks.”
