ZIMBABWE Senior Men’s National Cricket team coach Heath Streak has warned the current crop of players in the national side to start delivering or face the chop.

He was speaking soon after watching his charges lose their opening match of the One Day International Tri- Series against Sri Lanka at Harare Sports Club on Monday.

The former Zimbabwe captain, who was October this year appointed national team coach, hinted at dropping underperforming seniors in future national team assignments.

“Some of these guys have had a lot of opportunities through their careers and I suppose they have to take the game as their source of livelihoods and in their own hands and start performing because if they do not start performing, then we have got to start looking at other people who are putting their hands up and give them an opportunity to showcase what there are capable of doing,” said the former Zimbabwe International.

The Zimbabwe national cricket team, popularly known as the Chevrons, lost the opening match of the Tri-Series to Sri Lanka by 8 wickets.

After having won the toss, the Asians decide to bowl restricting the hosts to 154 runs in 43 overs, a target which was an arm’s length for the visitors who are still basking in glory after a two nil Test Series win against the locals last week.

The visitors only needed 24.3 overs to chase down the total with 153 balls to spare.

A disappointed Streak blamed his charges for not showing character in the match, dismissing the notion that Zimbabwe had lost the match at toss.

“Losing the toss was not great but it was not an excuse for our performance, and yes conditions were in their favor but looking back, you could see the guys did not come to party except for Chari,” said the Zimbabwe national team coach.

Sri-Lanka will play West Indies on Wednesday at Harare Sports Club, with the remaining fixtures of the Tri-Series set to be played in Bulawayo.
