Hippo kills Zimbabwean woman in Limpopo

Tzaneen – A Zimbabwean woman was killed and another seriously injured when a hippopotamus attacked them while they were out fishing in the Nwanedzi river near Nkambako village in Tzaneen, Limpopo police said on Tuesday.

“During this incident, one woman of around 50-years-old was killed and her friend, a 57-year-old woman who is a resident of Nkambako village, sustained serious multiple injuries throughout the body,” said police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe.

The surviving victim has been admitted to the Letaba Hospital.

The deceased has still not yet been identified but it has been confirmed that she is a Zimbabwean national.

Ngoepe said that an inquest into her death has been opened and that police investigations were underway.

After the mosquito and puffadder, the hippopotamus is regarded as one of Africa’s deadliest animals, killing up to 2,900 people per annum.
