Hospitalised Mutasa pleads for mercy

Harare: PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe revealed Saturday that under fire Zanu-PF Secretary for administration, Didymus Mutasa, is hospitalised in South Africa while his wife needs to travel to India for urgent medical attention.
Mutasa, currently presidential affairs minister but implicated in an alleged plot to assassinate Mugabe, failed to turn up at the week-long Zanu-PF congress along with vice president Joice Mujuru who is said to be the lead conspirator.
But addressing delegates at the congress Saturday evening, Mugabe said Mutasa phoned him from South Africa where he is hospitalised for an undisclosed complaint.
The Zanu-PF leader said he was not clear whether Mutasa’s ailment is due to shock at the exposure of their coup plot.
And as if things could not get any worse for the embattled minister, his wife was also seriously ill with plans afoot to seek treatment in India.
“I spoke to Mutasa over the phone this morning and he said he is better, but his wife requires more medical attention. They indicated that they might go to India for further treatment,” said Mugabe.
The President said it was unfortunate that Mutasa was part of the Mujuru faction that sought to unseat him.
He said the faction even consulted n’angas and prophets to seek assistance that would see them taking over the leadership of the party.
“They would ask, when will Mugabe die? So that they take over,” Mugabe said.
He called on party cadres to be principled and remain united if the ruling party is to lead the revival of the country’s economy and shame its western detractors. mutasa
