I will not persecute gays: Tsvangirai

Bulawayo- Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai says he will not prosecute gays if he wins in the upcoming elections.

Addressing journalists at the Bulawayo Press Club on Friday, Tsvangirai said while he does not subscribe to homosexuality, he will not temper with their freedom as enshrined in the constitution.

“I will not persecute gays. I know in our society gays are shunned upon and far as I am concerned i am not gay, I don’t support gays. I only want to say that i will not prosecute or persecute gays because in the constitution they are given that right,” Tsvangirai said.

“There is freedom of sexual orientation in the current Constitution of Zimbabwe. Why should that clause be violated?” he asked.

President Robert Mugabe is on record describing homosexuals as “worse than pigs and dogs”.
At one point, Mugabe took his fight against homosexuals to the United Nations summit and provoked anger among activists
