Kapfupi In Trouble

Comedian-cum musician Freddy “Kapfupi” Manjalima failed to release his album titled “Toothbrush” last year due to financial constraints it has emerged. Kapfupi whose fortunes have been waning, announced last year that he would be releasing an album in 2014 but failed to do so. Kapfupi reportedly wanted to record the album with a new studio to improve the quality of his music

Sources close to the musician said the new songs were ready last year but he failed to raise money to get into the studio for recording.

“All songs were done last year but then he could not raise the money to record the album,” he said.

The source added that the musician had hopes that his latest comedy, “Mr Kapfupi”, would finance the recording but it performed poorly.

“He had planned that after selling the DVD he would then use the money to record the album but the plan failed,” said the source.

Kapfupi who announced early last year that he was merging forces with another sungura musician Ronnie Mudhindo on the new album, said he just decided to hold the album until March.

“I know there are my enemies who are bringing such stories to the press but then I just decided to hold it until March,” he said.

He could not divulge the reason he was holding the album.

“It’s only that I was waiting for producer Bothwel Nyamhondera to come so that I can record the album,” he said.

Nyamhondera returned home from the United Kingdom last year. Kapfupi has been struggling to maintain his music and acting careers and his popularity is waning.

He had a promising future when he started his career and many thought he would follow the footsteps of Safirio “Mukadota” Madzikatire but he could not match the standard.

Coming from a humble background, Kapfupi was poised for a rags-to-riches story but he is now failing to keep the momentum he set at the begining of his career.

Born 36 years ago in Ruwa, Kapfupi attended Raymondale Primary School, where his passion for acting started in Grade Four.

This was to continue in high school at Domboramwari Secondary School in Epworth, where he unfortunately dropped out in Form Two and had to take up menial jobs, among them acting and sewing.

In 1998, he teamed up with Jeffrey “Aphiri” Chikwesere to form True Vision Drama Club.

The two later went their separate ways when Kapfupi added live music to his act, leading to the formation of the band Orchestra Ndoozvo.
