  • JOHANNESBURG – Robert McBride, the suspended head of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), is to appear in Court on Tuesday charged with fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed on Sunday that it is to charge McBride in connection with tampered evidence relating to the rendition (or illegal kidnapping and deportation) of Zimbabweans in 2010.

In May last year lawyers commissioned by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko recommended that action be takien against McBride for altering an Ipid report on the renditions.

The lawyers concluded that the findings in the report had been changed to exonerate former Hawks boss Anwa Dramat.

Nhleko had already suspended McBride in March.

However, in December the South Gauteng High Court  ruled that the suspension was unlawful.
