Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko’s  wife,  Laurinda, is demanding at east US$150 000 from the government, which money she wants to go towards replacing the lawn and the garden at the US$2 million Highlands home that the couple recently moved into grudgingly.mphoko

Sources in the ministry of Local Government and National Housing said that the feisty Madam Laurinda made it clear that she did not like the loan and the garden at her new home and would want to bring her own landscape architect from Mozambique to do loan and the garden at a cost of “just US$150 000”.

“As you might be aware, she is Mozambican, so she is saying she wants to bring her own landscape architect from Maputo to do the garden and loan to her taste,” the source said. It is clear how soon Treasury would cough up the amount so that the family—which owns the Choppies supermarket chain—can make its official residence at number 5 Corfe Road, Highlands, suitable for Madam Laurinda’s fine taste. It is clear how soon Treasury would cough up the amount so that the family—which owns the Choppies supermarket chain—can make its official residence at number 5 Corfe Road, Highlands, suitable for  Laurinda’s fine taste.

Laurinda is a relative of the late Mozambican president, Samora Machel, whom he met when Joshua Nkomo’s ZAPU deployed him to Maputo as party of the joint operation between ZIPRA and ZANLA, called the Zimbabwe People Army (ZIPA).

After falling in love, Mphoko deserted the war and stayed in a hotel in Mozambique where he enjoyed good life together with the ZANU leadership in that country, a relationship that led him into being a career diplomat under President Mugabe until his appointment as Vice President in 2014. President Robert Mugabe had to literally kick the couple out of the five-star Rainbow Towers hotel where it was housed since Mphoko was appointed Vice President in 2014. Madam Laurinda could be taking after her husband.

In May this year Mphoko was quoted as telling some villagers in Matabeleland that he was more important than a chief and therefore no one can tell him to leave the hotel, even rudely insisting that his expenses were nothing compared to those of President Mugabe. There had been surging public outrage over his stay at the hotel at a time government was struggling to pay salaries to civil servants. Angry groups of placard-waving protestors drawn from the National Vendors Union, Restoration of Human Rights and militant pressure Tajamuka/Sesijikile had once stormed the hotel, demanding that he vacates the property saying his continued stay there demonstrated extravagance and insensitivity to the plight of the majority of suffering Zimbabweans.
